A burst pipe moves fast. One minute everything is normal, the next there is water on the floor, soaking walls, and heading for anything nearby.
What you do in the first few minutes matters more than anything that happens afterwards. Here is the sequence: what causes bursts in the first place, and how to prevent the next one.
The First Steps
Shut off the main water supply. This is the step that limits the damage, and everything else can wait until it is done
Drain the remaining water. Open faucets throughout the house to relieve pressure in the lines
Electricity: be careful here. If water is near outlets or the panel, do not operate switches while standing in water. CDC guidance on flooded homes is to call an electrician rather than wading to a panel yourself
Move valuables clear of the affected area
Contain the water with towels, buckets, or anything on hand
Photograph everything before cleaning up. Insurers ask for it

Why Pipes Burst

High water pressure. Sustained pressure above what fittings are rated for stresses every joint continuously until something gives. A properly set pressure-reducing valve prevents this.
Aging or corroded pipes. Metal pipe corrodes and weakens over decades. Copper and galvanised steel both have service lives, and the actual duration depends heavily on local water chemistry rather than on a fixed figure. External damage. Construction work, a misplaced nail, or tree roots can puncture a line. What starts as a slow leak from that kind of damage often escalates before it is noticed.
Warning Signs Before the Burst

If It Has Already Burst
Do not attempt to thaw or patch it under pressure. Shut off the water first, always.

A tape or clamp patch on a burst line rarely holds. It buys minutes, not a solution, and a failed patch overnight usually means more damage than the original burst.
Warranties and code compliance matter here. Unpermitted or improperly repaired plumbing surfaces at resale, and a failed DIY fix can complicate an insurance claim.

Preventing the Next One
