Plumbing does not fail during business hours. It fails at 2 am, on a Sunday, over a holiday weekend, and the cost of waiting until morning is usually larger than the cost of the call.
This guide covers what genuinely counts as an emergency, what to do in the first few minutes, and when it can reasonably wait.
What Counts as an Emergency
Call now:
A burst or actively leaking pipe
Flooding of any kind
Sewage backing up into the house
A water heater leaking from the tank body
No water at all

What to Do Before We Arrive
Shut off the water. Use the fixture valve if the problem is isolated, or the main shutoff for anything larger. This is the step that limits the damage
Electricity: be careful here. If water is near outlets or the panel, do not operate switches while standing in water. CDC guidance on flooded homes is to call an electrician rather than wading to a panel yourself

Why Waiting Costs More
Water spreads faster than people expect. A leak running from 11 pm to 7 am moves through drywall, along joists, and under flooring. The plumbing repair does not change much overnight. The restoration bill does.

Water Heater Failures
A tank leaking from the body cannot be repaired and tends to go from a puddle to a large volume without much warning. Overflowing Toilets and Backups
Close the shutoff valve behind the toilet. If it will not turn, lift the tank lid and push the flapper closed by hand. If several fixtures are backing up at once, stop using water throughout the house — that indicates the main line rather than the toilet.

Find your main shutoff today. Confirm it turns, label it, and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is. A valve that has not moved in fifteen years is a problem worth discovering on a dry afternoon.
Book an annual inspection. A whole home plumbing inspection catches corrosion, pressure problems, and a failing water heater while they are still scheduled work.
Insulate before winter. Crawl spaces, garages, and exterior walls are where pipes split during the few hard freezes we get.
Flush the water heater yearly. Sediment shortens tank life and is the cheapest maintenance on the list.
