What Is a PEX Repipe, and Which Type Should You Use?
Replacing the water supply lines throughout a house with cross-linked polyethylene tubing instead of copper or galvanized steel. Straightforward enough — except PEX isn't one product, and the choice that matters most isn't the tubing at all. It's the fittings.

What Does a PEX Repipe Actually Involve?
What is a PEX repipe: taking out the existing supply piping — hot and cold, from where the service enters the house to every fixture — and running new PEX in its place. Drains and waste lines aren't part of it.
The reason it's the default for most whole-house work is installation rather than the material. A pex piping repipe runs in long continuous lengths, bending around corners where copper needs an elbow, so a pex whole house repipe involves far fewer joints and much less demolition to get the tubing in. That shows up directly in the restoration bill, which is usually the larger half of the total.
Two layouts exist. Trunk and branch mimics the old copper arrangement, with a main line and tees off it. Home run manifold gives each fixture its own dedicated line back to a central manifold — more tubing, more labour, better isolation and more consistent pressure when several fixtures run at once. Which suits a house depends on fixture count and where the manifold can sit.
How much does a PEX repipe cost in Sammamish? That sits in our Washington repiping cost guide, and whether your house needs repiping at all is covered in our Sammamish repiping guide — most homes on the plateau are newer than people assume and genuinely don't.
Which PEX Type Should You Use?
Here's what almost nobody explains. PEX comes in three types, distinguished by how the polyethylene is cross-linked.
Type | Method | Character | Fittings |
PEX-A | Peroxide | Most flexible, kinks can be heat-repaired | Cold expansion, or insert |
PEX-B | Silane | Stiffer, coil memory, higher burst pressure | Crimp, clamp, or insert |
PEX-C | Electron beam | Stiffest, least forgiving of kinks | Crimp or clamp |
The important part: all three must meet the same standards. ASTM F876 governs the tubing regardless of crosslinking method, and every type sold for potable water in the US has to comply with it and with the SDR9 dimensional standard. So the differences are real but they're about handling and installation, not about one being permitted and another not.
Practically, PEX-A's flexibility means fewer fittings on a complex run and a kink that can be rescued with a heat gun rather than cut out. PEX-B is stiffer to work with and costs less. Both are used in serious whole-house work every day.
If a pex repipe specialist Sammamish Washington homeowners are considering can't tell you which type they're installing and why, that's worth noting.
Why Do the Fittings Matter More Than the Pipe?
Because tubing rarely fails in the middle. Joints fail.
Three systems dominate. Cold expansion stretches the tubing and a ring over the fitting and lets it shrink back — no reduction of the inside diameter, since the fitting sits inside an expanded pipe. Crimp and clamp use an insert fitting with a copper ring or stainless cinch clamp around it, which is proven and inexpensive but the insert narrows the bore slightly at each joint. Push-fit connectors are fast and useful for repairs, and most plumbers would rather not bury dozens of them in walls.
Two things follow.
Systems are engineered together. ASTM F877 covers complete PEX systems — tubing, fittings, manifolds and installation practice — rather than tubing alone. Mixing a brand of tubing with another brand's fittings outside what the manufacturer approves is where warranty problems begin.
Bore reduction accumulates. On a trunk-and-branch layout with many insert fittings, the cumulative restriction is worth thinking about on a house that already has marginal pressure.

Why Does Chlorine Matter More Than Hardness Here?
This is the Sammamish-specific part, and it's the opposite of what you'd expect.
Water hardness is the local story for copper and for fixtures — Sammamish Plateau Water blends medium-hard groundwater with softer regional supply, landing around 3 to 6.5 grains. Scale is what wears out cartridges and water heaters here, covered in our general plumbing guide.
PEX doesn't care about hardness. Scale doesn't adhere to it the way it does to metal. What PEX does care about is chlorine — the District chlorinates its groundwater for disinfection and to address taste and odour, and free chlorine in hot water causes oxidative degradation of polyethylene over time.
The industry addresses this directly rather than ignoring it. ASTM F876 requires tubing to be tested for oxidative stability in potable chlorinated water, using the method in ASTM F2023, and requires a minimum extrapolated lifetime of 50 years to qualify for potable water use. Testing runs at 4 ppm free chlorine — which matches the EPA's maximum permitted disinfectant residual — at elevated temperature.
So chlorinated water is designed for, not overlooked. What matters practically is buying tubing that carries the certification imprint rather than unmarked product, and recognising that recirculating hot water systems run hotter for longer and are the harder duty.
One related property: F876 also requires UV resistance testing, because sunlight degrades PEX. That means tubing shouldn't be stored in the sun on site, and any exposed run needs protecting.
What Does the PEX Warranty Actually Cover?
Yes, and the conditions are where people get caught out.
Manufacturers warrant the tubing, typically for a long term measured in decades. Three conditions usually attach.
Approved fittings. Because the standards cover the system rather than the tubing alone, using unapproved fittings can void coverage on the tubing they're attached to.
Approved tools and technique. Expansion and crimp connections both depend on being made correctly with the right tool, and some manufacturers require installer certification.
Material, not labour. A manufacturer warranty replaces defective tubing. It does not pay to open your walls, remove the failed section, install the replacement and put the finishes back — that's the installer's workmanship warranty, and it's the half that actually costs money.
So the question to ask any pex piping service near Sammamish isn't just "is it warranted" but what's your own workmanship warranty, in writing, and how long does it run? [CONFIRM: Eastside's workmanship warranty term — supply it and I'll state it here.]
Keep the paperwork either way. A warranty claim years later needs the product documentation and evidence of who installed it.
How Long Does It Take, and Is PEX Better Than Copper?
A pex pipe replacement across a whole house is typically one to two days of plumbing for most Sammamish homes, followed by drywall repair, texture and paint — and that finishing work usually occupies more calendar than the pipework. You keep water throughout, since we isolate and work in sections rather than shutting down for days.
Two-storey homes, more than two bathrooms and slab-on-grade construction all extend it, because access drives the schedule far more than square footage does.
On is PEX better than copper for repiping: not universally, and Sammamish is a place where copper remains a legitimate choice because the water isn't aggressive toward it. Our live PEX versus copper guide sets out the full comparison rather than the short version.
We cover Sammamish including Pine Lake, Klahanie, Sahalee and Inglewood, plus Issaquah, Redmond and Bellevue. The service sits on our repiping page, routine work on general plumbing, the area list on our locations page, and finished jobs in the gallery.
If you're searching pex repipe near me Sammamish WA, ask three things: which PEX type, which fitting system, and what your workmanship warranty covers. Those tell you more than a price does.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a PEX repipe?
Replacing all the water supply piping in a house — hot and cold, from where the service enters through to every fixture — with cross-linked polyethylene tubing. Drains and waste lines aren't included. PEX is the usual choice for whole-house work because it runs in long continuous lengths and bends around corners, so there are far fewer joints and much less wall and ceiling opened up than copper requires. That reduction in demolition shows up directly in the restoration cost, which is normally the larger half of the bill.
2. How much does a PEX repipe cost in Sammamish?
Fixture count, number of bathrooms, storeys, access, layout, and the standard of restoration afterwards. Crawlspace homes cost less than slab-on-grade because far less wall and ceiling needs opening. A home-run manifold layout uses more tubing and labour than trunk-and-branch but gives better isolation and steadier pressure. The variable that catches people is restoration — drywall repair, texture matching and paint — so always confirm whether a quote includes it, since one that stops at the pipe isn't comparable to one that doesn't.
3. Is PEX better than copper?
Not universally, and Sammamish is a case where copper stays legitimate. The District's blended supply runs roughly 3 to 6.5 grains of hardness rather than the very soft surface water some Eastside cities receive, so copper isn't fighting the water chemistry the way it does elsewhere. PEX still wins on installation — longer continuous runs, fewer joints, less demolition and therefore lower restoration cost — and it's unaffected by the scale that hard water leaves on metal. Our PEX versus copper guide covers the full comparison.
4. How long does a PEX repipe take?
One to two days of plumbing for most Sammamish homes, then drywall repair, texture and paint, which typically takes longer on the calendar than the pipework itself. You keep water throughout: we isolate and work in sections, shutting down for part of each working day and restoring service before leaving, so nobody needs to move out. Two-storey homes, more than two bathrooms and slab-on-grade construction all extend the schedule, since access matters far more than square footage.
5. Does PEX come with a warranty?
Yes, and the conditions matter. Manufacturers warrant the tubing for a long term, usually conditional on three things: approved fittings, since the standards cover complete systems rather than tubing alone and unapproved fittings can void coverage; correct tools and technique, with some manufacturers requiring installer certification; and material rather than labour. A manufacturer warranty replaces defective tubing — it doesn't pay to open walls, remove the failure and restore finishes. That's the installer's workmanship warranty, which is the half worth getting in writing.
